When we were working with our manufacturer to develop our lens technology, we thought we wanted an orange lens because that was the standard for blue-blocking eyewear. However, we had trouble finding a lens that could effectively block blue light, with none even coming close to the numbers we were wanting.
At the same time, we realized that no orange lenses looked good in a frame, and this didn’t fit with our vision of making a stylish product that people would actually want to wear. So we asked our manufacturer to build a prototype using polycarbonate red lenses from laser-grade eyewear instead.
The results were even better than we could have hoped – the new lenses not only looked beautiful, but also blocked over 99.8% of the total light across the entire spectrum known to trigger melatonin suppression (400-570 nm), far surpassing the capabilities of yellow or orange lenses. With that discovery we were able to launch Carbonshade.
Artificial light and the rapid growth of screen-based technology has been the root of many problems in the world for decades, and we're proud to be a part of the effort working to mitigate the negative effects. According to the CDC more than one in three American adults don't get enough sleep, and an estimated 68 percent (164 million) struggle with sleep at least once a week. The problem is massive, and it's draining people's pockets – Americans spend upwards of $50 billion a year on sleep aids, many of which don't help very much.
Carbonshade glasses are designed to be worn in the evening prior to going to bed. It's in these crucial hours that artificial light tricks our brain into thinking it’s still daytime, shifting our circadian rhythm which results in poor sleep and sub-optimal health. By blocking the responsible light, you can go to bed knowing you'll wake up more rested and refreshed.
After running a successful Kickstarter campaign, updating our product lineup with new styles, and filing a provisional patent on our new lenses, Carbonshade has become not only the best blue-blocking eyewear maker but also one of the most popular, with people in over 50 countries using Carbonshade to sleep better.
